Our Instructors

F.I.S.T.

Future Instructor Special Training. This unique program was developed by our dojo to formalize the way by which those who teach students are prepared - and authorized.

At one time, it wasn't done this way and today, very often, still is not.

Always a Privilege

Teachers and students deserve one another. Eventually each gets what they deserve.

It bears repeating: Our instructors never take standing before a class or a student for granted.

Students must want to live up to their instructor before they can expect to live up to themselves.

Good is the Enemy of Best

Teaching isn't a perk for advanced students.

It's a separate study track alongside of personal training. It's also demanding. So much so that, although the program is open to all, few apply. Standards remain high even after appointment to the staff. Continuing instructor training is the key to excellence.

Instructors take this admonition seriously: "When you make a mistake, students pay for your education. Never make them pay twice."

In the dojo, when students and teachers bow to each other, there's never any question why.

Head Instructor, S.T. Musco

Mr. Musco began study 1974 at age 26 and became a full time professional karate teacher in 1986.

He has had two teachers. The late D.A. Jenkins (1946-1984), founder of the association, Jersey Judo Karate Kai, authorized him to open our dojo. Mr. Musco was a charter member of that organization.

He went on, in 1986, to become a founding director of its successor organization, American Budo Kai.

Mr. Musco then continued his studies with A.J. Advincula (an original student of Tatsuo Shimabuku, founder of Isshin-ryu Karate) with whom he remains an active student.

As Head Instructor, Mr. Musco is responsible for instructor training. He also gives seminars on martial philosophy and principles, and teaches workshop classes for empty-hand and weapons both here in the dojo and to outside groups.

Why People Choose Us

Don't entirely trust website testimonials? Neither do we. Instead, we encourage people to talk with our members - students and parents. (Of course they'll like us - they're still here! The more important question is what do they like about us.)

From practice comes progress. For us, it's effort that's always recognized. Rules are enforced consistently and evenly. We have no 'favorites', no 'super-stars'. No one is ever left behind.
Safety is always first. All members are valued and treated with respect. We practice courtesy and manners as the hallmarks of good martial attitude - both on and off the floor. We promote cooperation among students, not competition.
We adhere to the three universal dojo principles: "All start from the bottom. Everybody works. Nothing comes free." Students meet standards, not the other way around. We correct, we insist, not punish or reprimand.
We are expert, knowledgeable and experienced in the art and about teaching it to individuals. We are professional at conducting events and dojo operations. In business, we are honest, candid and reasonable.
We are dedicated to each individual student's achievement and development. To that end, we continually seek to improve our teaching and depth of our training.
